Adam's been spending a lot of time outside with Alanna, but not usually from this vantage point. He snickers a little as he watches people pass below.

"I'm sure the masses will be upset."

He pulls his legs up and wraps his arms around them.

[called_lioness]

"The masses who were going to come to my wedding to see me nude?" she asks, amused, and leans back on her elbows as she watches him.

[last_adam]

"Mhmmm. They'll be horified to find you covered up in a beautiful dress."

[called_lioness]

"Don't even know where I'll get one," she muses, and shrugs, a little.

"Don't have a clue about most of the wedding. Or marriage, I suppose, for that matter."

[last_adam]

"You'll be fine."

And there's not even a hint of wavering or joking in his voice.

[called_lioness]

"I think so," she says quietly and reaches out to touch his arm, briefly, in gratitude.

"Thank you. For--for this, and for everything."

[last_adam]

Adam shrugs, and leans back in the grass.

"Dunno that there's anything to thank me for."

[called_lioness]

There are times when you don't say anything.

And then there are times when you're not entirely certain how many more times you'll see or hug or be able to tell someone the things you don't say, so Lucy looks over and smiles.

"If I hadn't loved you, Adam, I couldn't love him as well as I do. If I didn't have you, I wouldn't have known what matters most. If I didn't have you, I don't think I'd have shared as much with Caspian as I have. And if I didn't have you, I wouldn't be me." She leans over and presses a kiss to his forehead before sitting up. "I do love you, you know. And always will. And I thank you for that, and everything else."

He nods, still staring up at the sky, and smiling at her as her face briefly passes his.

"Suppose it's as good a time as any, then.'

[called_lioness]

"--I'm not taking any more dragons."

[last_adam]

"How about a babysitting gig?"

[called_lioness]

Lucy is silent, for a few moments, and the way she's turned, Adam can't see her face.

"I should like that very, very much," is the soft response he finally gets.

[last_adam]

He opens his mouth a few times to say something, and in the end, he says nothing.

[called_lioness]

When she looks back, she looks

tired and happy and sad and not quite there, but mostly--mostly she looks happy.

"In fact, I'll insist on it. All the more reason, I suppose, that I'll just have to stay here for quite a while yet."

[last_adam]

"That sounds quite excellent to me."

[called_lioness]

"Lovely," she says, picking up some grass and tossing it at him with a smile.

"Congratulations."

[last_adam]

"Thanks."

He beams.

"Not quite used to telling people yet."

[called_lioness]

"That's why you have nine months, to get used to telling people and the idea," she grins. "And then you have to get used to actually having the child."

[last_adam]

He laughs, but it's a little less enthusiastic this time.

"Think we will?"

[called_lioness]

Lucy looks at him for several moments before asking, "Do I think you'll get used to it, or do I think you'll be good parents?"

[last_adam]

"I meant the first, but either, really."

[called_lioness]

"I think you rather get used to it when there's a small person there all the time. As for the second...I'll tell you a secret," she says, and rests her chin on her hand. "Narnia was the place I'd most choose to be, of all the places I was in life, but it wasn't very advanced. Females of all races died in childbirth. I was often called, when they were in labor, to be there, because of my cordial. And I have seen many, many women and men about to become parents, because of that. I don't think one of them was a better father than you can be, or a better mother than Alanna can be. And I don't think either of you will let the other do anything but their best."

Adam bites his lip and, there in the field, he reaches out for Lucy's hand.



"I think I needed to hear that."

[called_lioness]

"That's why I told you," she says, simply, and squeezes the hand.

"If I can help, you or Alanna, let me?"

[last_adam]

"Of course."

A pause, and a laugh.


"Well, I'll try."
