The sun's bright (well, in England terms, it is) and the air is fresh (aside from the pollution from the cars) and the food is fresh (okay, no, it's take-away, but that'll do).

They hadn't had hotel reservations, but you'd be surprised what miracles being the son of satan could bring about, and you'd be surprised how comfortable the beds at the Mandarin Oriental are, even if Adam and Alanna spent more of the night smiling awkwardly at each other than sleeping. (Yes, just smiling awkwardly. No, that's not a euphemism. They may not have a lot of tact, but there was another person in the room, you perverts.)

And after store after store (after store) of being subjected to Alanna and Lucy's retail therapy, Adam's more than pleased to be stretched out on a blanket near a small lake (pond, really) with the sound of traffic almost, but not quite, out of hearing.

"Would one of you mind passing me a biscuit?"

Which is probably for the best, really, as the woman stops short and turns around to glare when Alanna says,

"Oh, Goddess. Absolutely. Look, the dragon is even green."

"Sweet Aslan, it is a sign," Lucy says with something like glee in her voice.

At which point the woman approached and glares at them both from up close before declaring, "You young ladies should be ashamed of yourselves! What would your mothers think to know what paths you've travelled?"

If Lucy were Lilly, she would put her arm around Alanna's shoulder and press their cheek clothes and says, "I don't know, haven't spoken to mine since our wedding."

As Lucy is not, she merely blinks at the woman.

Blithely, "my mother died in childbirth when the magic couldn't save her."

It's true!

The woman gasps, wagging her finger in their direction. Alanna eyes it like she expects flames to spark forth. "Heathens," the woman declares.

Lucy blinks, slowly.

Lucy is not Lilly.

Lucy has, however, spent time around her, and Alanna, and dealt with various people for years calling her worse.

"Barbarian, actually," she says mildly, and smiles. "But I suppose if you're very technical it's close enough. Though I don't worship the river or wood gods, you understand."

It is possible the woman looks ready to faint or orgasm at her glee for having an excuse for Righteous Anger at this point.

"Yes, I'm the one marrying the Antichrist."

Turning to Lucy, she says conversationally, "that's something I certainly didn't expect to say this morning."

The woman lifts her umbrella like she's preparing to whack them with it.

"I can't say anything," just as mildly, "my boyfriend's technically married with a son older than I am, depending on how you measure it."

That would be about the point the woman starts to swing, but she only manages to take out a display of The Davinci Code."

"Personally, I think our mothers would say we are quite interesting young ladies, don't you?"

Giggling, Alanna grabs the umbrella and twists it out of the woman's hand.

"Careful, you might poke out your own eye." The umbrella is quickly returned.

"I'm certain they never had lives quite so exciting," Lucy agrees, and smiles at the woman.

"I'll make sure to pray that you don't hurt yourself with your umbrella, though."

That idea is enough for her to hurry away, and leave Lucy blinking at Alanna.

"How odd."

"Did you get the feeling that she disapproved of us in some way? How perfectly strange."

She shakes her head sadly.

"Indeed I do. Perhaps I should have told her I'm a shaman as well. That usually seems to set people's minds at ease."

"It truly is."

And yet she's smiling as they approach the cash register.
