*It's not that he's bored. Anything but. And he'd stay by Alanna's side 24/7, if they let him. But the healers come in twice a day or more, and they give him that look, and really it's best for all if he makes himself scarce in the meantime. Besides which, it'll take forever to go through all of the books in the Palace.*

Jon is in the library, reading a tome on magical properties of the earth, trying to glean any information on heading off the worst effects caused by the earthquake last year. He rubs his eyes, trying to make himself focus.

*It's not really a surprise to see Jon around, not anymore, not after all this time. And so Adam gives him a light smile, taking a peek at his papers.*

Jon looks up and gives him a weary smile. "A bit. Hours of not sleeping, worrying about how your people are going to eat next year will do that to a person." He sighs and shakes his head. "How are you? Did the healers kick you out of Alanna's room again?"

You don't have that on a schedule or something? 9 am, breakfast, 10am, Adam gets booted from the room.

*He manages a smirk at that, and flops down into a chair nearby.*

Jon raises an eyebrow. "Possibly it's the hovering and the hints that if you two were elsewhere, you could heal her in about 5 minutes?"

Jon stifles a grin. "Well, what do the healers we have here have to say about her condition? Any new developments I should be aware of since I checked on her last night?"

Thom had some questions.

Jon's eyes narrow at the mention of Thom's name. "He had questions about what, exactly? He knows he can't come back here."

He knows he can't come back here. But I don't know anything, and the healers sure as hell aren't helping. I thought maybe he could-

"We don't need his help. I'm sorry, but I just don't trust any help he would give us."

Maybe you want to let Alanna make that decision.

Jon opens his mouth to snap, but stops himself. He's too tired to argue with Adam right now. He shrugs instead. "Perhaps. I still don't know what he could do from the bar that would be effective here."

Not do. But he knows things, Jon.

Jon looks at him. "Yes, he does. And do you know what he did with that knowledge?" His voice is low, with a dangerous edge.

Yes, I do.

*He's about to add, "but she's his sister," before thinking better of it.*

But he can't do anything from there, and it's not like we have many other options at this point.

Jon sighs and rubs his eyes again. "Fine. But I'm not sure if it's a good idea for me to speak to him. I've tried being civil with him, but he'll have none of it."

Thom's not really one for civil.

*But then, neither is Adam, so it all works out.*

You don't have to deal with him at all.

"If Alanna wants me to, I will. Otherwise, I'm letting you handle it." He smiles. "We need to give you something to do with yourself."

You don't enjoy having a resident bum?

*Not that he's been doing nothing. But there's only so much reading up about cider he can do, and there's only so far away he's willing to go.*

"Well, it does add a certain something to the castle, but I don't want you to get stir crazy. Have you spoken to Raoul about doing some work with the Own?"

Jon nods. "I know."

He looks Adam square in the eyes. "Please believe me, Adam, if I had known how extensive her injuries were, I would have brought her straight to the Bar. Or brought you to Tortall sooner."

I know you would have.

*But his voice is quiet.*

Jon lets the silence linger for a few minutes. It's not a bad silence, just both of them thinking. He finally picks his book up and shuts it firmly.

"I can't do any more of this right now."

Do you some good to get out.

*Do them both some good, really.*

Don't suppose you'd fancy some sparring. Or is that below the King?

Jon smiles slowly. "I think that would do me a world of good. And sparring is never below a King. I think. Well, I've just decided it's not."

He stands up and lays the book on the table beside him, then bows to Adam, gesturing out the door with a grin.
